Adoptable animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. Our animals are examined by a veterinarian, and adopters get a coupon for a free visit to a veterinary partner of their choice after adoption. We also include a starter pack of food, goodies and coupons for you and your new companion.
What to bring with you when adopting
Landlord approval (if applicable)
Identification and proof of address (Driver's License or ID)
Cash, MasterCard or Visa (We do not accept checks)
Your current dog, if you are planning on adopting a new dog - just be sure that you have someone who can wait with your dog as you meet our adoptable pets. Though we require a dog-to-dog meeting before finalizing an adoption, we do not allow doggie visitors inside the kennels.
A transport carrier, especially if you plan on adopting a cat
Please allow ample time and patience when adopting. It takes time to meet your match.
You may not find the perfect pet for you on your first visit. That's okay! New animals are looking for homes almost every day. Don't get discouraged...it may take some time, but that new pet who is just right for you is out there, and hoping that you don't give up.
Consider your needs, but also be flexible. If you are always working late, don't have the resources for training and don't have much space, that adorable but high-energy Jack Russell may not be for you. On the other hand, the laid-back, older adult terrier may be just right. Imagine the personality and needs of your perfect pet, but try to be flexible otherwise. You may be surprised to see who ends up being the perfect match for you.
Have your home set up to accommodate your new pet before it arrives (fences repaired, crate set up, supplies ready, etc.). It will help make the transition smoother for both of you.
Be prepared for an adjustment period. It'll take some time (usually, two weeks) for you and your pet to get to know each other well. We are here to help, but patience and understanding is key!
By adopting from a shelter, you are helping to save two lives...the life of the animal you adopt, and the life of the animal who can now stay in their space. Thank you for visiting us to find your new companion!
What to keep in mind for your visit
Adoption outreach
Meet adoptable dogs during our monthly outreach events! Find us at Kahoots every second Saturday of the month and Petco every fourth Saturday. We also are at Dogtopia of San Marcos the first Sunday of the month.
Cats and rabbits from the Escondido Humane Society are available for adoption at several off-site locations.
Stop by the Escondido, Poway, Carmel Mountain or San Marcos Petco stores to meet our bunnies. Our feline friends can be found at PetSmart and Petco in Escondido and Petco in San Marcos.

Pet of the Week
be a little shy at first. But once I come out of my shell, I love to cuddle and am always purring. I am very affectionate with people, but I would prefer to be the only cat in the home. As part of the Humane Society’s cat and kitten adoption special, I can be adopted for just $55!
